Legal situationCybertruck on Swiss roads: Soon normal?
A video of a cybertruck in Zug is causing a stir. 20 Minuten clarifies whether it is legal - or not.
This Cybertruck was spotted in Zug.
Cybertruck: That's what it's all about
A Tiktok video of a cybertruck in Zug causes a stir.
This is because Tesla's e-truck is not actually registered in Switzerland.
But you can also use it in Switzerland with a trick.
"Legal?" - this question can be found under a Tiktok video that shows a Cybertruck with a US license plate on Swiss roads. This is because Cybertrucks are rarely seen in Switzerland - at least so far. The fact is: although it is impossible to obtain a license in Switzerland, it is not possible to drive the Tesla monster through the country. This was confirmed by the Federal Roads Office (Astra) on request.
Would you like to drive a Cybertruck?
Cybertruck allowed in principle, but ...
According to Astra, the vast majority of cars sold in Switzerland require a so-called European global approval. The Cybertruck does not have this, which is why dealers are not yet selling it in Switzerland.

If you import a Cybertruck from the USA, even though the vehicle does not yet have European type approval, you can apply for individual type approval in Switzerland - but this is expensive and the outcome is uncertain.
20min/Michael ScherrerBut is it even legal to drive an e-truck on Swiss roads? It is not forbidden, but there are many hurdles. For example, if you have a license for a Cybertruck in a European country that has ratified the International Convention on Road Traffic of 8 November 1968, you can also drive your Cybertruck on Swiss roads.
Approval in Switzerland in 2025?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans to make Cybertrucks available throughout Europe in 2025. So will it soon be possible to obtain approval in Switzerland? In principle, yes, says Astra - but Tesla needs the aforementioned overall European approval for this. In order to obtain this, Tesla may have to adapt the Cybertruck to European requirements.

20 Minuten attended the presentation of the Cybertruck in Zurich.
20min/Michael ScherrerThis is the Tesla Cybertruck
The Tesla Cybertruck is a battery-powered commercial vehicle from the US manufacturer Tesla in the form of a pick-up truck.
Weight: approx. 3100 kilograms
Range: 547 kilometers
0-100 km/h: 2.7 seconds
Length: 5.7 meters
Width: 2.4 meters
Height: 1.8 meters
Payload: 1.1 tons
Individual type approval as an expensive alternative
If someone imports a Cybertruck from the USA although the vehicle does not yet have European type approval, they can apply for individual type approval in Switzerland or Europe. The person must provide proof that the vehicle in question complies with the standards, says Astra. This is a very expensive procedure with an open outcome: a recognized test centre (in Switzerland, for example, the DTC Dynamic Test Center AG) must certify the vehicle's conformity with our technical standards - in particular with regard to pedestrian protection.
